Mental health care does not fail because people don't want help. It fails because care rarely begins where trust already exists.
Heal by Hair is Bluemind Foundation's flagship delivery model: a community-based mental health system embedded in one of the most trusted spaces in women's lives — the hair salon.
Across Africa, salons are not just places of beauty. They are places of conversation, intimacy, continuity and truth.

They are not therapists.
They are first responders, present long before crisis becomes visible.
Voices from the salons

In African salons, trust is woven with every braid, this is where care begins.

AbidjanWhat this changes on the ground
Because salons are:
Gendered safe spacesBuilt on long-term relationshipsAnd visited every few weeks, often for years

Mental health conversations emerge naturally, without stigma, labels or fear. Each salon becomes a first door to care.
- Distress is detected earlier
- Isolation decreases
- Help-seeking becomes normal not exceptional
Structured psychosocial support
Early pilots revealed a critical insight:
Women spoke. They trusted their hairdressers. But referrals alone were not enough.
Cost, distance, fear of being seen and stigma still stood in the way.
Building on trust created in salons, Bluemind Foundation offers Heal by Hair Circles, free, structured psychosocial groups that help women move from a single conversation to ongoing peer support, without shame, long travel or unaffordable fees.
Each Circle consists of:- Six facilitated sessions on themes such as grief, gender-based violence and resilience.
- Community-trained facilitators with continuous professional supervision.
- No cost to participants, removing price as a barrier.
- Clear safeguarding ethics and referral pathways when specialised care is needed.
Care becomes collective, not isolating.
Healing becomes something women do together.

The Circle didn't end after six sessions. We still meet. We still support each other.

Heal by Hair demonstrates how community-based mental health can be both culturally grounded and clinically responsible.
Referral & continuity of care
Some situations require more than community-based support.
For acute, complex or high-risk cases, the system activates structured referral pathways to:
- Psychologists and mental health professionals.
- Social services.
- Health facilities.
- Protection actors, particularly in cases of gender-based violence.
Bluemind Foundation does not replace professional care.
We make it reachable, timely and less frightening.
Because women are already supported, informed and accompanied, referrals are more likely to be accepted and followed through.

Heal by Hair is an integrated community mental health protocol in which hairdressers receive a free three-day training and a six-month supervised follow-up, facilitate structured Heal by Hair Circles as a first layer of psychosocial support, and activate referral pathways to professional and protection services when needed.
